Näytteiden tie Limaan / The samples' way to Lima

Ensi askel: Näytteet pakattuna käytettyihin pahvilaatikkoihin Moyobamban hostellin aulassa. Jokainen valkoinen säkki sisältää kaksi muovipussia: saman tutkimusalan sanikkaisnäytteet duplikaatteina. Näytteet ovat vanhojen sanomalehtien välissä, kukin omalla aukeamallaan. Isolehtiset saniaiset vievät monta aukeamaa. Sanomalehdet on kostutettu 70-prosenttisella alkoholilla näytteiden pilaantumisen estämiseksi. Kosteina ne kestävät myös paremmin kuljettamista. Yhteensä sanomalehtiaukeamia on noin 725. Näytteet painavat yhteensä 88 kiloa. Toivon itsekin olevani niin kevyt, mutta sen verran hyvin kyllä söin, varsinkin kaupungissa ollessa, että todennäköisesti täytyy pikemminkin aloittaa dieetti.

The first step: Fern samples packaged into second-hand cardboard boxes in the Moyobamba hostel. Each white sack contains two plastic bags: The samples of one plot in duplicate. In total there are about 725 fern samples between newspaper sheets. They are moisted with 70 % alcohol to prevent fungi and insects from eating them. Moisted they also tolerate better the rough handling on the journey. The total weight of the samples is 88 kg.

Second step: El motokar. Elias and I needed two of them to transport all four fern boxes plus one moss box with fern DNA samples in silicagel.

Third step: Moviltours company's bus station in Moyobamba. The boxes travel in the baggage compartment of a passenger bus. The journey over the mountains to the coast and then to the south to Lima takes about 24 hours. Notice the Finnish Jeesusteippi – Cinta Jesucristo. It's the silvery one. Salva lo todo!

Kolmas askel: Moviltours -bussifirman asema Moyobambassa. Laatikot matkustavat kuten Suomessa matkahuollossa. Matka vuoriston yli rannikolle ja rannikkoa etelään Limaan kestää noin 24 tuntia.

Ja siinä ne olivat! Minun saniaislaatikkoni, keskellä yhdeksän miljoonan ihmisen suurkaupunkia. Se tuntui käsittämättömältä. Laatikot näyttivät siltä kuin niitä olisi aina ohimennen potkittu, mutta näytteet olivat päällisin puolin ehjiä.

And there they were! My fern boxes, in the middle of a nine-million city! It felt incomprehensible. The boxes looked like rather ragged but the samples inside were at least superficially in good condition.

Then we took a taxi to the herbarium. In the backround, the National Stadium of Peru.

The secretary of the herbarium weighs the samples. Their drying is paid according to wet weight. In the drying, the alcohol will evaporate and the samples remain dry in between the numbered newspaper sheets.

Job done! As a reward, delicious food from Lima, like here Causa de pescado. It is served cold and it has fish in the middle of mashed potatoes.
